How to become a qualified motor mechanic

Motor mechanics work on the mechanical and electrical components of all vehicles. There are many skills required for the job which is why becoming a qualified motor mechanic takes time. Read about the process of becoming a qualified motor mechanic below:

High school
You will need to matriculate with high marks that will enable you to enrol in a degree or certificate programme. This will allow you to apply for vocational training, the next step in the process of becoming a motor mechanic.

Vocational training
You can acquire vocational training through vocational schools or colleges. Here you will either study an associate degree or a certificate in automotive service technology. The courses suggested for motor mechanics are mathematics, English, computers and more. Sometimes, this training is not required, although it is useful. Often workshops will offer apprenticeships to high school students, if they have the necessary marks and skills.

Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship can range from 4 to 5 years, depending on the company and their requirements. Through this time, you will learn numerous skills from hands-on experience with the vehicles. Once the apprenticeship is completed along with any tests, you will be considered a qualified motor mechanic.

Test
Often, to be accepted into an apprenticeship programme, you will need to complete a series of tests that will prove to the company whether you have the skills and knowledge necessary to become a motor mechanic. You will also be required to complete a trade test during the time that you are working as an apprentice.

Master
To become a master motor mechanic, you will need to be skilled in all the automotive speciality areas. This requires a lot of time and dedication.
