What does a motor mechanic do?

Motor mechanics, auto mechanics, automotive technicians; these are all titles that refer to the mechanics that maintain, repair and replace parts in our cars. Their job involves hands-on work, as well as client interaction. Read about the roles and responsibilities of a motor mechanic below:

Maintenance
The motor mechanic is responsible for the maintenance of a vehicle. The client should bring their vehicle in every now and then according to manufacturer specifications. When the vehicles are brought in, the motor mechanic has the job of inspecting certain elements of the car and replacing and adjusting them as necessary. The vehicles’ brakes should be checked for wear and tear, the wheel alignment should be adjusted and much more.

Diagnosis
Motor mechanics need to diagnose problems. Most vehicles have diagnostic systems that will pinpoint the source of the problem. However, the mechanic will still have to do further analysis to determine the cause of the problem and to find a solution for this problem. Some older cars will not have diagnostic systems and the mechanic will have to do a full diagnosis manually.

Repairs
Often, vehicles will be brought in to be checked because they have been problematic. The motor mechanic will need to identify the problem, analyse the parts and decide whether they can be fixed or if they are broken beyond repair. Broken parts will need to be replaced. The motor mechanic is responsible for sourcing parts and installing them.

Quotes
The motor mechanic needs to keep track of what repairs have been done, replacements that have been made and replacement parts that have been bought in order to draw up a quote for the customer. The mechanic must be able to explain why repairs and replacements have taken place on the vehicle.
