How long does it take to become a fully qualified auto electrician?

There are many different educational routes to take to become a fully qualified auto electrician. Each of these educational options vary in duration. A student can study from 6 months up to two years. Read below to find out how long it takes to become a fully qualified auto electrician.

Apprenticeship
An auto electrician apprenticeship can take between two to three years to complete. During this time, the apprentice will need to complete a trade test. A traineeship, on the other hand, will take one to two years to complete.

Certificate
A student can choose to undergo auto electrician vocational training that requires them to complete a certificate, diploma or award. This vocational training can take between 6 to 12 months to complete. This educational route is enhanced with hands-on experience.

Associate degree
An associate degree is a two-year degree. During these two years you will gain the theory that you need to be able to become an automotive technician. You will have to study modules such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, computers and electronics. This degree is most attractive to potential employers when paired with hands-on-experience.

Bachelor’s degree
A bachelor’s degree in automotive electronic engineering usually takes four years to complete. Throughout this degree, students will learn theory and practical work that will prepare them for automotive electrician careers once they have completed their degree. This degree can also be extended by completing honours and masters which would usually extend the degree by two years.
